For the fourth time, Jane Muir has been elected to serve on the executive committee of the Dade County Bar Association. The association is a 501(c)6 trade association, otherwise known as a voluntary bar association. Attorneys and law students are allowed to take part in the organization, and there is a special membership designation for paralegals. The association is the largest voluntary bar association in Florida. Its goal is to serve as a voice for Miami-Dade County’s diverse legal community. The organization has an annual budget of approximately $500,000 and significant assets including a building that is located steps from the historic Dade County Courthouse.
The board of directors of the organization is divided by years of practice. There are five representatives for each group. The groups represent years of practice. (Group 1 includes attorneys who have been practicing for five years or less, Group 2 includes attorneys practicing 5-10 years and so on.) The bylaws of the association require a year between board memberships. The executive committee is composed of one member to represent each group, with the officers of the organization. The committee meets weekly, and is responsible for considering questions regarding governance of the organization, executive compensation and performance, and financial information.
Muir served her first term as a member of the Board of Directors in Group 1 from 2010-2013. All three years that she served, she was elected to the Executive Committee. During the year between her first and second term, she served on the Budget Committee, and oversaw an audit of the organization’s books and records. Elected to a second term as member of the board in 2013 this time for Group 2, she was again elected to represent Group 2 on the Executive Committee. The board of directors meets monthly, and is responsible for governing the Dade County Bar Association.
